86. Lighthouse of Alexandria

The lighthouse was designed by the architect Sostrados from Knidos (Alexandria, Egypt) and built on the Greek island of Pharos around 300 to 280 B.C. The tower was notable for its gigantic proportions. The platform was square and each side was 340m long. It reached a height of 140m. It was not only the highest tower in the world, but the first tower in history. The tower stood at the harbour entrance for over 1600 years. In 1326 it collapsed during an earthquake. Since 1480 Fort Kait Bay his stood on the original site.
