92. Colossus of Rhodes

After the siege of their city by Demetrios in 305/04 B.C. was lifted the people of Rhodes decided to honour their patron saint god sun Helios with a 30-meters tall statue. The bronze monument was erected on a marble base and took 12 years to complete. 75 years later it was badly damaged by an earthquake and collapsed. The idea that the Colossus stood with the legs spread at the entrance to the harbour does not correspond to the known evidences. Many years of research by professor Wolfram Hoepner and his Greek colleagues made possible a reconstruction of the statue, which is now supposed to be much closer in appearance to the original monument.

Measurements: Height of the statue 1,26 m
Height of the base 0,56 m (incl. the dam)
