87. Halikarnassos Mausoleum

King Mausolos never saw the completion of his construction, because he died in 353 B.C. before it was finished. However his wife and sister, Artemisia oversaw its completion. A monument in the Quadriga was dedicated to Mausolos and Artemisia. In the 12th century the building was destroyed. Mausolos's name will never be forgotten, because it is now used in the word "mausoleum." The 24 steps represent the number of years he reigned.
